Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in 1979, Jimmy Zambrano began his teaching career at the age of 18 as a piano instructor in the city of Milagro. He was later invited to become a founding teacher at Jerusalén School, where he taught in primary education.
He has more than two decades of experience in teaching across primary, secondary, and higher education, as well as in educational research. He is an accredited researcher in Ecuador (REG-INV-18-02634) and maintains an established academic profile on international scholarly platforms, including Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, ResearchGate, ORCID, and the AD Scientific Index. His research interests focus on evidence-informed instructional design, cognitive load theory, collaborative and self-regulated learning, and the use of technology in education.
He holds two doctoral degrees. In 2019, he was awarded a PhD by the Open University of the Netherlands under the supervision of the internationally recognised scholars Paul A. Kirschner, John Sweller, and Femke Kirschner (download the thesis). He also earned a Doctorate in Education from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in 2018, graduating Summa Cum Laude (see selected photographs below). His academic background further includes master's degrees in distance education, knowledge management, and theological studies.
Throughout his career, he has served as a university lecturer, researcher, and academic leader, directing initiatives aimed at strengthening teaching quality and curriculum development. He has published more than 30 scholarly works, including journal articles and book chapters, in both high-impact (Scopus/Web of Science) and regional journals. His publications address topics such as the efficiency of collaborative learning, the effects of cognitive load, multimedia learning, self-regulated learning, and teachers' educational myths, among others. He is married and has two children, with whom he shares his passion for music and lifelong learning.

Receiving my Doctorate in Education from the late Fr Francisco José Virtuoso SJ, then Rector of Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB). This doctoral research replicated and extended my earlier work on the factors influencing collaborative cognitive load.
